Our Guide To Keeping Kuhli Loach Fish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Pangio kuhlii
    • Common name: Kuhli Loach
    • Family: Cobitidae
    • Origin: Southeast Asia, from Malaysia to Indonesia
    • Adult length: 5-12 cm
    • Lifespan: 10-15 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Kuhli Loaches are bottom dwellers and prefer tanks with plenty of hiding spots like caves, plants, and driftwood.
    • A sandy substrate is recommended to prevent injury to their delicate bodies.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Kuhli Loaches thrive in tropical water conditions with a temperature range of 24-30°C (75-86°F).
    • Maintain a slightly acidic to neutral pH level between 6.0 and 7.5.
    • They are sensitive to water quality, so regular water changes are essential.
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • Provide gentle to moderate water flow in the tank as Kuhli Loaches prefer slow-moving waters.
    • Use a sponge filter or a filter with a low flow setting to avoid stressing them.
  5. Diet:

    • Kuhli Loaches are omnivores and will accept a variety of foods including sinking pellets, flakes, and frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp.
    • Feed them a balanced diet and offer sinking foods since they mainly feed at the bottom of the tank.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Kuhli Loaches are peaceful and social fish that thrive in groups of 5 or more individuals.
    • They are compatible with other peaceful community fish such as tetras, rasboras, gouramis, and small catfish species.
    • Ensure tank mates are not aggressive or territorial to prevent stress.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Kuhli Loaches are nocturnal and spend most of their time hiding in substrates or among plants during the day.
    • They are peaceful and do well in community tanks with other non-aggressive species.
    • Provide plenty of hiding spots to make them feel secure and reduce stress.
