Our Guide To Keeping Livingston’s Cichlid Fish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Nimbochromis livingstonii
    • Common name: Livingston’s Cichlid
    • Family: Cichlidae
    • Origin: Lake Malawi in Africa
    • Adult length: Up to 25 cm
    • Lifespan: 8 to 10 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Livingston’s Cichlids prefer a tank with plenty of swimming space and hiding spots. A minimum tank size of 200L is recommended for a small group of these fish.
    • Provide rocks and caves for hiding as well as open areas for swimming.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Livingston’s Cichlids thrive in alkaline water conditions with a pH range of 7.5 to 8.5.
    • Keep the water temperature between 24 to 28°C (75 to 82°F).
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • A moderate water flow is suitable for these fish, so choose a filter that provides gentle to moderate flow.
  5. Diet:

    • Livingston’s Cichlids are carnivores and will accept a variety of foods. Offer them high-quality pellets or flakes as a staple, supplemented with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and krill.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Livingston’s Cichlids are semi-aggressive and should be kept with similarly sized fish from Lake Malawi, such as other Mbuna cichlids.
    • Avoid keeping them with smaller or more passive fish species that may be bullied.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Livingston’s Cichlids are territorial and can be aggressive towards other fish, especially during breeding.
    • Provide plenty of hiding places and break lines of sight within the tank to reduce aggression.
