Our Guide To Keeping Black Banded Rainbowfish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Melanotaenia nigrans
    • Common name: Black Banded Rainbowfish
    • Family: Melanotaeniidae
    • Origin: New Guinea
    • Adult length: 8 - 10 cm
    • Lifespan: 5 to 7 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Black Banded Rainbowfish thrive in a well-decorated tank with open swimming areas. A minimum tank size of 75L is recommended for a small group.
    • Provide rocks, driftwood, and live or artificial plants to create hiding spots and replicate their natural habitat.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Maintain slightly acidic to neutral water conditions with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5.
    • Keep the water temperature between 24 to 28°C (75 to 82°F).
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • A moderate water flow is suitable for Black Banded Rainbowfish. Use a filter that provides gentle to moderate flow.
  5. Diet:

    • Black Banded Rainbowfish are omnivores and accept a variety of foods. Feed them high-quality flake or pellet food as a staple and supplement with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Black Banded Rainbowfish are generally peaceful and can be kept with other peaceful community fish. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species.
    • They can coexist with other Rainbowfish, tetras, and similar-sized community fish.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Black Banded Rainbowfish are active swimmers and exhibit schooling behavior. Keep them in groups of at least six for the best results.
    • They may be territorial during breeding, so provide sufficient hiding spots for females.
