Our Guide To Keeping Cauliflower Swordtail Fish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Xiphophorus helleri
    • Common name: Cauliflower Swordtail
    • Family: Poeciliidae
    • Origin: Central America, Mexico
    • Adult length: 12 cm
    • Lifespan: 3 to 5 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Cauliflower Swordtails thrive in a tank with a minimum size of 75L. Ensure the tank has open swimming spaces and some hiding spots created by plants and decorations.
    • Include hardy plants like Java Moss and Vallisneria, and maintain a substrate that allows them to exhibit their natural digging behavior.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Keep the water conditions slightly alkaline to neutral with a pH range of 7.0 to 8.3.
    • Maintain a water temperature between 22 to 27°C (72 to 80°F).
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • Use a moderate filter to ensure proper water circulation, but avoid strong currents that may stress the fish.
  5. Diet:

    • Cauliflower Swordtails are omnivores and will accept various foods. Provide a balanced diet with high-quality flakes or pellets as a staple.
    • Include live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to enhance their diet and promote optimal health.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Cauliflower Swordtails are generally peaceful and can be kept with other community fish such as tetras, barbs, and peaceful cichlids.
    • Avoid keeping them with aggressive or fin-nipping species to prevent stress and injuries.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Cauliflower Swordtails are active swimmers and may display some territorial behavior, especially among males. Provide ample space and maintain a proper sex ratio to reduce aggression.
    • They are compatible with a variety of community fish, but monitor their interactions to ensure a harmonious tank environment.
