Our Guide To Keeping Electric Blue Acara Cichlid Fish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Andinoacara pulcher
    • Common name: Electric Blue Acara Cichlid
    • Family: Cichlidae
    • Origin: South America, specifically the northern and western regions of South America
    • Adult length: Up to 15 cm
    • Lifespan: 5 to 10 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Electric Blue Acara Cichlids prefer a tank with plenty of hiding places and areas to establish territories. A minimum tank size of 75 gallons is recommended for a pair or small group.
    • Provide rocks, driftwood, and live plants like Amazon Sword or Vallisneria to mimic their natural habitat.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Electric Blue Acara Cichlids thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water conditions with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5.
    • Keep the water temperature between 24 to 28°C (75 to 82°F).
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • A canister filter or a powerful hang-on-back filter is recommended to maintain water quality in the tank. Ensure good water flow without creating strong currents.
  5. Diet:

    • Electric Blue Acara Cichlids are omnivores and will accept a variety of foods. Offer them a balanced diet consisting of high-quality flake or pellet food supplemented with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and chopped earthworms.
    • Include some vegetable matter in their diet, such as blanched spinach or zucchini, to provide essential nutrients.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Electric Blue Acara Cichlids are generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially during breeding. Compatible tank mates include other peaceful cichlids of similar size, peaceful community fish like tetras and rasboras, and bottom-dwelling species like Corydoras catfish.
    • Avoid keeping them with aggressive or overly territorial fish species.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Electric Blue Acara Cichlids are intelligent and active fish with individual personalities. They may display territorial behavior, especially when breeding, but are generally peaceful towards tank mates.
    • Provide plenty of hiding spots and visual barriers in the tank to reduce aggression and allow each fish to establish its territory.
