Our Guide To Keeping Electric Yellow Cichlid Fish
-
About Fish Species:
- Scientific name: Labidochromis caeruleus
- Common name: Electric Yellow Cichlid
- Family: Cichlidae
- Origin: Lake Malawi in Africa
- Adult length: 10 cm (4 inches)
- Lifespan: 5 to 10 years
-
Tank Setup:
- Electric Yellow Cichlids need a tank with plenty of rocks and caves to mimic their natural habitat of rocky shorelines. Ensure the tank has a sandy substrate.
- They are territorial, so provide enough hiding places and visual barriers to reduce aggression.
-
Water Parameters:
- Electric Yellow Cichlids thrive in hard, alkaline water conditions with a pH range of 7.5 to 8.5.
- Maintain the water temperature between 23 to 28°C (73 to 82°F).
-
Filtration and Water Flow:
- Efficient filtration is necessary to maintain water quality in their relatively small tanks.
- Ensure good water flow, but avoid strong currents as they are not natural swimmers.
-
Diet:
- Electric Yellow Cichlids are omnivores with a preference for vegetable matter. Offer them a varied diet including high-quality pellets, flakes, and occasional live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms.
-
Tank mates:
- They can be kept with other African cichlids of similar size and temperament, preferably those from Lake Malawi.
- Avoid keeping them with overly aggressive or much larger tank mates.
-
Behavior and Compatibility:
- Electric Yellow Cichlids are relatively peaceful but can be territorial, especially during breeding.
- They are best kept in a species-only tank or with other Lake Malawi cichlids in a well-aquascaped tank with ample hiding spots.
