Our Guide To Keeping Eureka Red Peacock Cichlid Fish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Aulonocara jacobfreibergi
    • Common name: Eureka Red Peacock Cichlid
    • Family: Cichlidae
    • Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
    • Adult length: 10-15 cm
    • Lifespan: 5 to 8 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Eureka Red Peacock Cichlids prefer a spacious tank with plenty of swimming space and hiding spots. A minimum tank size of 200L is recommended.
    • Provide rocky caves and crevices to mimic their natural habitat in Lake Malawi. Sand substrate is preferred as these fish like to sift through the sand.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Eureka Red Peacock Cichlids thrive in alkaline water conditions with a pH range of 7.8 to 8.6.
    • Keep the water temperature between 24 to 28°C (75 to 82°F).
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • A moderate to strong water flow is suitable for these fish, so choose a filter that provides adequate circulation.
  5. Diet:

    • Eureka Red Peacock Cichlids are omnivores with a preference for protein-rich foods. Offer them a balanced diet consisting of high-quality flake or pellet food as a staple.
    • Supplement their diet with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide essential nutrients and mimic their natural diet.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Eureka Red Peacock Cichlids are generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially males. They should be kept with other similar-sized cichlids and peaceful fish.
    • Avoid housing them with overly aggressive or much larger fish that might intimidate them.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Eureka Red Peacock Cichlids are active swimmers and display territorial behavior, especially males during breeding. They feel more secure with plenty of hiding spots and space to establish territories.
    • Avoid keeping them with aggressive or highly territorial fish species that may provoke conflicts.
