Our Guide To Keeping Festivum Cichlid Fish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Mesonauta festivus
    • Common name: Festivum Cichlid, Flag Cichlid
    • Family: Cichlidae
    • Origin: South America, specifically in the Amazon River basin
    • Adult length: Up to 15 cm
    • Lifespan: 5 to 8 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Festivum Cichlids appreciate a tank with plenty of hiding spots and territories. Provide caves, driftwood, and plants like Java Fern and Amazon Sword for them to claim as their own.
    • They prefer subdued lighting and a sandy substrate to mimic their natural habitat.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Keep the water temperature between 24 to 28°C (75 to 82°F).
    • Maintain a pH level around 6.5 to 7.5.
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • Aim for efficient filtration to keep the water clean, as Festivum Cichlids are sensitive to poor water quality.
    • Provide gentle to moderate water flow as they prefer calmer waters.
  5. Diet:

    • Festivum Cichlids are omnivores and will accept a varied diet. Offer them high-quality pellets, flakes, and occasional live or frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp.
    • Include vegetable matter in their diet, such as blanched spinach or zucchini slices.
  6. Tank mates:

    • They are generally peaceful but can be territorial during breeding. Suitable tank mates include other peaceful community fish like tetras, peaceful barbs, and catfish species.
    • Avoid keeping them with aggressive or overly territorial fish that may provoke them.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Festivum Cichlids are relatively peaceful but can show aggression during breeding or when defending territories.
    • They are best kept in pairs or small groups, ensuring each fish has enough space and hiding spots.
