Our Guide To Keeping Kali Tawa Rainbowfish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Melanotaenia sp. 'Kali Tawa'
    • Common name: Kali Tawa Rainbowfish
    • Family: Melanotaeniidae
    • Origin: Kali Tawa River, West Papua, Indonesia
    • Adult length: 8–10 cm
    • Lifespan: 4 to 6 years
    • Diet: Omnivore
    • Care Level: Moderate
    • Temperament: Peaceful
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Kali Tawa Rainbowfish thrive in a well-planted aquarium with open swimming areas. A minimum tank size of 120L is suitable for a small group.
    • Use a sandy or fine gravel substrate with driftwood and rocks to create a natural environment. Floating plants can help diffuse light.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Kali Tawa Rainbowfish prefer slightly alkaline water with a pH range of 7.0 to 8.0.
    • Maintain a temperature between 24 to 28°C (75 to 82°F).
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • They do well in aquariums with moderate water flow. Use a filter that provides good oxygenation without creating excessive current.
  5. Diet:

    • Kali Tawa Rainbowfish are omnivores and should be offered a varied diet. Use high-quality flake or micro-pellet food as a staple.
    • Supplement their diet with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms to enhance their colour and vitality.
  6. Tank mates:

    • They are peaceful community fish and should be kept in groups of six or more to encourage schooling behaviour and reduce stress.
    • Good tank mates include other peaceful rainbowfish, rasboras, tetras, and bottom dwellers like Corydoras and peaceful loaches.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Kali Tawa Rainbowfish are active and social. Males may display vibrant colours and mild sparring behaviour during breeding displays.
    • Avoid housing them with fin-nippers or overly aggressive species. They thrive in peaceful, planted community tanks.
