Our Guide To Keeping Kribensis Cichlid Fish
-
About Fish Species:
- Scientific name: Pelvicachromis pulcher
- Common name: Kribensis Cichlid
- Family: Cichlidae
- Origin: West Africa, specifically Nigeria and Cameroon
- Adult length: Males reach up to 10 cm (4 inches), females slightly smaller
- Lifespan: 5 to 8 years
-
Tank Setup:
- Kribensis Cichlids appreciate a tank with plenty of hiding places created by rocks, driftwood, and live plants. A tank size of at least 75 litres (20 gallons) is suitable for a pair.
- Provide sandy substrate and caves or coconut shells for breeding, as they are cave spawners.
-
Water Parameters:
- They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water conditions with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
- Keep the water temperature between 24 to 26°C (75 to 79°F).
-
Filtration and Water Flow:
- A moderate water flow is suitable, but ensure that the filter outlet is not too strong to avoid stressing the fish.
-
Diet:
- Kribensis Cichlids are omnivores and will accept a variety of foods. Offer them a balanced diet consisting of high-quality flake or pellet food supplemented with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.
-
Tank mates:
- They are generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially during breeding. Compatible tank mates include other peaceful community fish of similar size and temperament such as tetras, peaceful barbs, and small catfish species.
-
Behavior and Compatibility:
- Kribensis Cichlids are known for their interesting behavior, including their habit of digging and rearranging the substrate. They are also attentive parents and will fiercely protect their fry.
- Avoid keeping them with aggressive or fin-nipping fish species that may intimidate or harass them, especially during breeding.
