Our Guide To Keeping Jaguar Cichlid Fish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Parachromis managuensis
    • Common name: Jaguar Cichlid
    • Family: Cichlidae
    • Origin: Central America, specifically Nicaragua and Costa Rica
    • Adult length: Up to 35 cm (14 inches)
    • Lifespan: 10 to 15 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Jaguar Cichlids require a spacious tank with a minimum size of 200 litres for a single fish.
    • Provide plenty of hiding spots and caves using rocks and driftwood. They also appreciate a sandy substrate.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Maintain a pH range between 7.0 to 8.0.
    • Keep the water temperature between 25 to 28°C (77 to 82°F).
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • Use a powerful filtration system to maintain water quality as Jaguar Cichlids are messy eaters.
    • Ensure good water flow to mimic their natural habitat.
  5. Diet:

    • Jaguar Cichlids are carnivorous and prefer live foods such as small fish, insects, and crustaceans.
    • Offer them a variety of high-quality pellets, flakes, and frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Jaguar Cichlids are aggressive and territorial, so they are best kept alone or with large, robust tank mates.
    • Avoid keeping them with smaller or more passive fish that may become targets of aggression.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Jaguar Cichlids are highly territorial and can be aggressive, especially during breeding periods.
    • They may exhibit aggressive behavior towards tank mates, so choose companions carefully.
