Our Guide To Keeping Paralabidochromis chilotes ruti island Cichlid Fish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Paralabidochromis chilotes ruti island
    • Common name: Ruti Island Cichlid
    • Family: Cichlidae
    • Origin: Ruti Island, Lake Tanganyika, Africa
    • Adult length: 10 cm
    • Lifespan: 8 to 10 years
    • Diet: Carnivore
    • Care Level: Moderate
    • Temperament: Semi-aggressive
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Ruti Island Cichlids prefer a rocky tank setup with plenty of caves and crevices to hide and establish territories. A minimum tank size of 200L is recommended for a pair or small group.
    • Include a sandy substrate and rocks to create an environment similar to their natural rocky shores of Lake Tanganyika. Live plants can be added, but they should be hardy species like Java Fern or Anubias.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Ruti Island Cichlids thrive in alkaline water with a pH range of 7.8 to 9.0.
    • Keep the water temperature between 24 to 28°C (75 to 82°F).
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • A moderate to strong filtration system is required to maintain water quality, with a gentle water flow that mimics the natural current of Lake Tanganyika.
  5. Diet:

    • Ruti Island Cichlids are carnivorous and will accept a variety of foods such as high-quality pellets or flakes designed for cichlids, supplemented with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia.
    • Offer a balanced diet with a focus on protein to ensure their health and color.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Ruti Island Cichlids are best kept with other Tanganyikan species or peaceful cichlids that are not overly territorial.
    • Avoid housing them with smaller, more delicate fish, as they may be bullied or eaten.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Ruti Island Cichlids are semi-aggressive and can become territorial, especially during breeding. It is best to keep them in a species-only tank or with other robust cichlids.
    • Provide enough hiding spots and territories to reduce aggression and allow the fish to establish their spaces peacefully.
