Our Guide To Keeping Pearl Gourami Fish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Trichopodus leerii
    • Common name: Pearl Gourami
    • Family: Osphronemidae
    • Origin: Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia
    • Adult length: 10 to 12 cm
    • Lifespan: 5 to 8 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Pearl Gouramis prefer a well-planted aquarium with floating vegetation to create shaded areas. A tank size of at least 75 litres is recommended.
    • Include driftwood and rocks to provide hiding spots and simulate their natural environment.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Pearl Gouramis thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water conditions with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Maintain a water temperature between 24 to 29°C (75 to 84°F).
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • Use a gentle filtration system to avoid strong water currents, as Pearl Gouramis prefer calm or slow-flowing water.
  5. Diet:

    • Pearl Gouramis are omnivores and enjoy a varied diet. Include high-quality flake or pellet food as well as live or frozen options like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia.
    • Feed them multiple small meals throughout the day to mimic their natural feeding behavior.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Pearl Gouramis are generally peaceful and can be kept with other non-aggressive community fish such as tetras, rasboras, and other gourami species.
    • Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping tank mates that may stress or harm them.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Pearl Gouramis exhibit interesting behaviors, including bubble nest building by males. They can be kept in pairs or small groups.
    • Provide floating plants for the males to build bubble nests, which is a part of their reproductive behavior.
