Our Guide To Keeping Scarlet Badis Fish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Dario dario
    • Common name: Scarlet Badis
    • Family: Osphronemidae
    • Origin: South Asia, specifically India and Bangladesh
    • Adult length: Approximately 2.5 to 3 centimeters (1 to 1.2 inches)
    • Lifespan: 2 to 3 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Scarlet Badis fish thrive in densely planted tanks with plenty of hiding spots. Provide a soft substrate like sand or smooth gravel.
    • They prefer dim lighting and areas with floating plants to simulate their natural habitat.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Scarlet Badis fish prefer slightly acidic to neutral water conditions with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Maintain the water temperature between 22 to 26°C (72 to 79°F).
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • A gentle to moderate water flow is suitable for these fish. Consider using a sponge filter or a filter with adjustable flow settings.
  5. Diet:

    • Scarlet Badis fish are carnivores and require a diet rich in protein. Offer them high-quality, small-sized pellets or flakes, as well as live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Scarlet Badis fish are relatively peaceful but can be territorial, especially during breeding. They are best kept in species-only tanks or with peaceful tank mates that occupy different areas of the tank.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Scarlet Badis fish are known for their striking appearance and interesting behaviors. They may exhibit aggression towards conspecifics, especially during breeding, so provide plenty of hiding spots to reduce aggression.
    • Avoid keeping them with larger or aggressive fish species that may bully or outcompete them.
