Also known as burrowing snails, live bearing snails, MTS and trumpet snails these snails are infamous in aquaria for their popularity and hatred in equal measure depending on the aquarist.

The advantages to this type of snail, is that they are small, inconspicuous and spend much of their life dredging underneath the tank substrate consuming food that would otherwise degrade and negatively affect the water chemistry.

Conversely, they will breed rapidly and great care must be taken to control their population numbers to avoid them overloading a tank's filtration and crashing the system. In this way, manual removal can prove effective, also making sure to avoid overfeeding other tank inhabitants will limit the waste available for MTS to feed on.
