Our Guide To Keeping Senegal Bichir Fish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Polypterus senegalus
    • Common name: Senegal Bichir
    • Family: Polypteridae
    • Origin: West and Central Africa, Senegal River basin
    • Adult length: Up to 30 cm (12 inches)
    • Lifespan: 10 to 15 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Senegal Bichirs require a spacious tank with a secure lid as they are capable of jumping. A minimum tank size of 200L is recommended for juveniles, but adults may need larger tanks.
    • Provide hiding spots like caves, driftwood, and plants as they are nocturnal and like to hide during the day.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Senegal Bichirs prefer slightly acidic to neutral water conditions with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5.
    • Maintain the water temperature between 24 to 28°C (75 to 82°F).
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • Provide a gentle to moderate water flow in the tank.
    • Avoid strong currents as these fish come from slow-moving waters.
  5. Diet:

    • Senegal Bichirs are carnivorous and should be offered a diet rich in protein. They readily accept a variety of live and frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and small feeder fish.
    • Feed them sinking pellets or tablets specifically formulated for carnivorous fish as a staple diet.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Senegal Bichirs are generally peaceful but may eat smaller tank mates that can fit in their mouth. Choose tank mates of similar size and temperament.
    • They can be kept with larger, non-aggressive fish like cichlids, larger tetras, and catfish species.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Senegal Bichirs are nocturnal and spend most of the day hiding. They are relatively shy and solitary fish.
    • They are compatible with other peaceful, non-aggressive fish that won't compete for food.
