Our Guide To Keeping Silver Dollar Fish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Metynnis hypsauchen
    • Common name: Silver Dollar
    • Family: Characidae
    • Origin: South America, primarily in the Amazon River Basin
    • Adult length: 15 cm
    • Lifespan: 10 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Silver Dollars prefer a spacious tank with ample swimming space. A minimum tank size of 200L is recommended for a small group of these fish.
    • Provide hiding places and areas with dense vegetation. They appreciate plants, but due to their herbivorous nature, use hardy plants like Java Fern and Anubias, or artificial plants.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Silver Dollars thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water conditions with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Keep the water temperature between 24 to 28°C (75 to 82°F).
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • A moderate water flow is suitable for these fish, so choose a filter that provides gentle to moderate flow.
  5. Diet:

    • Silver Dollars are primarily herbivores and prefer a diet rich in plant matter. Offer them high-quality flake or pellet food designed for herbivorous fish.
    • Supplement their diet with blanched vegetables like spinach, lettuce, and peas, as well as algae wafers.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Silver Dollars are peaceful schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least five to reduce stress and encourage natural behaviors.
    • They are compatible with other peaceful community fish such as other tetras, larger rasboras, peaceful barbs, and larger catfish species.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Silver Dollars are active swimmers and display schooling behavior, so they feel more secure and exhibit their best colors when kept in a group.
    • Avoid keeping them with aggressive or fin-nipping fish species that may intimidate or harass them.
