-
About Fish Species:
- Scientific name: Placidochromis phenochilus
- Common name: Star Sapphire Hap
- Family: Cichlidae
- Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
- Adult length: 15 - 20 cm
- Lifespan: 8 to 10 years
-
Tank Setup:
- Star Sapphire Haps require a spacious tank with plenty of open swimming space. A minimum tank size of 300L is recommended for a small group.
- Decorate the tank with rocks and caves to mimic their natural habitat. They also appreciate the addition of sand substrate.
-
Water Parameters:
- Star Sapphire Haps thrive in alkaline water conditions with a pH range of 7.5 to 8.5.
- Maintain the water temperature between 24 to 28°C (75 to 82°F).
-
Filtration and Water Flow:
- Provide efficient filtration as Star Sapphire Haps are sensitive to water quality. Aim for a moderate water flow.
-
Diet:
- Star Sapphire Haps are omnivorous, but primarily carnivorous. Offer them a varied diet consisting of high-quality pellets, flakes, and occasional live or frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp.
- Supplement their diet with vegetable matter such as spirulina flakes or blanched vegetables.
-
Tank mates:

- Avoid keeping them with aggressive or overly territorial fish that may stress or harm them.
-
Behavior and Compatibility:
- Star Sapphire Haps are active swimmers and can be mildly aggressive, especially when breeding. Provide ample hiding spots and territories to minimize aggression.
- They may display territorial behavior, especially towards fish of similar size and coloration.
