Our Guide To Keeping Sulphur-head Peacock Cichlid Fish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Aulonocara maylandi
    • Common name: Sulphur-head Peacock Cichlid
    • Family: Cichlidae
    • Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
    • Adult length: 12-14 cm (4.7-5.5 inches)
    • Lifespan: 5-8 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Provide plenty of hiding spots using rocks and caves, and use sand or fine gravel substrate to mimic their natural habitat.
    • Decorate the tank with rocks, driftwood, and live plants (though they may uproot plants), creating territories and breaking lines of sight to reduce aggression.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Keep the water temperature between 23-27°C (73-81°F) and the pH around 7.5-8.5.
    • Regular water changes are essential to maintain water quality.
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • Use a good filtration system as these fish are sensitive to poor water quality.
    • Ensure gentle to moderate water flow to mimic their natural habitat.
  5. Diet:

    • Feed them a variety of high-quality pellets, flakes, and frozen or live foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and small insects.
    • Supplement their diet with vegetable matter, like spirulina, to promote their vibrant colors.
  6. Tank mates:

    • They are relatively peaceful for cichlids but can be territorial, so choose tank mates of similar size and temperament, avoiding overly aggressive or shy species.
    • Compatible tank mates include other African cichlids from Lake Malawi, such as Mbunas and peaceful Haplochromis species.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • They exhibit typical cichlid behavior, establishing territories and showing occasional aggression, especially during breeding.
    • Provide plenty of hiding places and breaking lines of sight to reduce aggression among tank mates.
