Our Guide To Keeping Tiger Limia Fish
-
About Fish Species:
- Scientific name: Limia sp. "Tiger"
- Common name: Tiger Limia
- Family: Poeciliidae
- Origin: Lake Miragoâne, Haiti
- Adult length: 4.5 to 5.5 cm
- Lifespan: 2 to 3 years
- Diet: Omnivore
- Care Level: Easy
- Temperament: Peaceful
-
Tank Setup:
- Tiger Limias are best kept in a planted aquarium with open swimming space and scattered cover. A 60L tank is suitable for a small group.
- Include fine-leaved plants like Hornwort, Java Moss, or Water Sprite. Driftwood and rocks can also help mimic their natural habitat.
-
Water Parameters:
- They prefer alkaline water with a pH range of 7.0 to 8.2.
- Maintain temperatures between 23 to 28°C (73 to 82°F).
- Water hardness should be moderate to hard, mimicking their native lake environment.
-
Filtration and Water Flow:
- Use a sponge or hang-on-back filter that provides gentle to moderate flow. Stable water quality is more important than strong circulation.
-
Diet:
- Tiger Limias are omnivores and thrive on a varied diet. Offer quality flakes or micro pellets as a staple.
- Supplement with live or frozen daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and vegetable matter such as spirulina or blanched spinach.
-
Tank mates:
- They are peaceful and can be housed with guppies, platies, endlers, Corydoras, and other small, gentle species.
- Avoid larger or aggressive species that may outcompete them or cause stress.
-
Behavior and Compatibility:
- Tiger Limias are active and social, best kept in groups of 6 or more to encourage natural behaviour and reduce stress.
- Males may occasionally spar for dominance, but serious aggression is rare in well-structured tanks.
