Our Guide To Keeping X-Ray Tetra Fish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Pristella maxillaris
    • Common name: X-Ray Tetra
    • Family: Characidae
    • Origin: South America, specifically in the Amazon and Orinoco River basins
    • Adult length: Up to 4 cm
    • Lifespan: 3 to 5 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • X-Ray Tetras prefer a heavily planted tank with subdued lighting to mimic their natural habitat. Provide plenty of hiding places among plants and driftwood.
    • A tank size of at least 60 cm (24 inches) in length is suitable for a small group of X-Ray Tetras.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Keep the water temperature between 24 to 28°C (75 to 82°F).
    • Maintain slightly acidic to neutral water conditions with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • A gentle water flow is preferred, so choose a filter that provides adequate filtration without creating strong currents.
  5. Diet:

    • X-Ray Tetras are omnivores and will accept a variety of foods including high-quality flake or pellet food as a staple.
    • Offer them live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia to supplement their diet and enhance their coloration.
  6. Tank mates:

    • X-Ray Tetras are peaceful schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least six individuals.
    • They are compatible with other small, peaceful community fish such as other tetras, rasboras, and small catfish species.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • X-Ray Tetras are active and peaceful fish that display schooling behavior. They feel more secure and exhibit their best colors when kept in a group.
    • Ensure tank mates are peaceful and not aggressive to prevent stress or harassment.
