Our Guide To Keeping Blackbanded Sunfish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Enneacanthus chaetodon
    • Common name: Blackbanded Sunfish
    • Family: Centrarchidae
    • Origin: Eastern United States
    • Adult length: Approximately 6 inches
    • Lifespan: 4 to 6 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Blackbanded Sunfish prefer a tank with plenty of hiding spots such as rocks, caves, and plants. A tank size of at least 30 gallons is recommended.
    • Provide a sandy substrate and driftwood to mimic their natural habitat.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Maintain water temperature between 65°F to 75°F (18°C to 24°C).
    • Water pH should be neutral to slightly acidic, ideally between 6.5 to 7.5.
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • Use a filtration system appropriate for the size of the tank to maintain water quality.
    • Blackbanded Sunfish prefer gentle water flow.
  5. Diet:

    • Offer a varied diet including high-quality pellets, flakes, and live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and small insects.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Blackbanded Sunfish are territorial and may not tolerate other fish of the same species. They are best kept alone or with other peaceful species such as small tetras or rasboras.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Blackbanded Sunfish are generally peaceful but can be aggressive towards tankmates, especially during breeding season.
    • Provide plenty of hiding spots to reduce aggression and territorial behavior.
