Our Guide To Keeping Cardinal Tetra Fish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Paracheirodon axelrodi
    • Common name: Cardinal Tetra
    • Family: Characidae
    • Origin: Amazon basin in South America
    • Adult length: 3 cm
    • Lifespan: 5 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Cardinal Tetras prefer a heavily planted tank with dim lighting to mimic their natural habitat. A minimum tank size of 20L is recommended for a small school of these fish.
    • Provide hiding spots among plants and driftwood, as well as open swimming areas.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Cardinal Tetras thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water conditions with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Keep the water temperature between 21 to 27°C (70 to 80°F).
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • Cardinal Tetras prefer gentle water flow, so a sponge filter or a filter with adjustable flow is recommended.
  5. Diet:

    • Cardinal Tetras are omnivores and will accept a variety of foods. Offer them a balanced diet consisting of high-quality flake or micro pellet food as a staple.
    • Supplement their diet with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp for optimal health and coloration.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Cardinal Tetras are peaceful schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least six individuals to thrive and exhibit natural behavior.
    • They are compatible with other peaceful community fish such as other tetras, rasboras, small peaceful barbs, and small catfish species.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Cardinal Tetras are shoaling fish and feel more secure when kept in a group. They display vibrant colors and are active swimmers.
    • Avoid keeping them with aggressive or fin-nipping tank mates that may stress or harm them.
