Our Guide To Keeping Ropefish
-
About Fish Species:
- Scientific name: Erpetoichthys calabaricus
- Common name: Ropefish
- Family: Polypteridae
- Origin: West Africa, including the Niger Delta and the Ogun River basin
- Adult length: Can reach up to 50 cm (20 inches)
- Lifespan: 8 to 15 years
-
Tank Setup:
- Ropefish require a tank with a tight-fitting lid as they are known to be escape artists. A minimum tank size of 200L is recommended for a single ropefish, with additional space needed for each additional fish.
- Provide plenty of hiding spots such as caves, PVC pipes, and driftwood. Dense vegetation and floating plants can also be beneficial.
-
Water Parameters:
- Ropefish prefer soft to moderately hard water with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
- Maintain the water temperature between 24 to 28°C (75 to 82°F).
-
Filtration and Water Flow:
- Effective filtration is essential for maintaining water quality as ropefish are sensitive to water conditions. Aim for a gentle to moderate water flow in the tank.
-
Diet:
- Ropefish are carnivorous and prefer live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, blackworms, brine shrimp, and small crustaceans.
- They may also accept sinking pellets or tablets, but live foods should form the majority of their diet to ensure proper nutrition.
-
Tank mates:
- Ropefish are peaceful but may eat very small tank mates. They can be kept with other peaceful, non-aggressive fish of similar size that will not fit in their mouth.
- Consider tank mates such as larger tetras, barbs, gouramis, and peaceful catfish species.
-
Behavior and Compatibility:
- Ropefish are nocturnal and may hide during the day, becoming more active at night.
- They are generally peaceful but may become territorial during breeding.
