Our Guide To Keeping Green Jade Shrimp

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Neocaridina davidi (Green Jade variant)
    • Common name: Green Jade Shrimp
    • Family: Atyidae
    • Origin: Taiwan
    • Adult length: 2.5 to 3.5 cm
    • Lifespan: 1 to 2 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Green Jade Shrimp prefer a heavily planted tank with hiding places to feel secure. A minimum tank size of 20L is suitable for a small colony.
    • Incorporate mosses like Java Moss and other fine-leafed plants to provide ample grazing surfaces and shelter.
    • Low to moderate lighting helps promote algae growth, which is a natural food source for shrimp.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • They thrive in neutral to slightly alkaline water with a pH range of 6.5 to 8.0.
    • Maintain water temperature between 18 to 26°C (64 to 79°F).
    • Green Jade Shrimp are sensitive to ammonia and nitrite spikes, so stable water conditions are essential.
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • A sponge filter is ideal for shrimp tanks, providing gentle filtration and keeping the shrimp safe from being sucked into the filter.
    • Moderate water flow is recommended, as too much current can stress the shrimp.
  5. Diet:

    • Green Jade Shrimp are scavengers and feed on algae, biofilm, and plant debris.
    • Supplement their diet with high-quality shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables like spinach or zucchini, and occasional protein foods such as brine shrimp or daphnia.
  6. Tank mates:

    • They are peaceful and do well with other small, non-aggressive tank mates such as snails, small tetras, and other dwarf shrimp.
    • Avoid housing them with fish that may view them as prey, like larger or more aggressive species.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Green Jade Shrimp are active and enjoy exploring the tank, spending much of their time grazing on surfaces.
    • They are best kept in groups to encourage their natural behaviors and increase their chances of successful breeding.
