Our Guide To Keeping Green Tench Fish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Tinca tinca
    • Common name: Green Tench
    • Family: Cyprinidae
    • Origin: Europe and parts of western Asia
    • Adult length: 30 to 60 cm
    • Lifespan: 15 to 20 years (some may live longer)
    • Diet: Omnivore
    • Care Level: Moderate
    • Temperament: Peaceful and shy
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Green Tench are best suited for large, natural-style ponds with soft, muddy bottoms where they can forage and burrow.
    • Include areas with aquatic plants, both rooted and floating, as well as plenty of shaded and covered spots for hiding.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Maintain a pH between 6.5 and 8.0.
    • Ideal temperature range is 10 to 24°C (50 to 75°F), though they are cold-tolerant and can overwinter in temperate climates.
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • Use a pond filter suitable for moderate bioload, as Tench are not particularly messy but do stir the substrate while foraging.
    • Gentle water flow is preferred, mimicking the calm waters of lakes and slow-moving rivers.
  5. Diet:

    • Feed a mix of sinking pond pellets and natural foods such as worms, insect larvae, crustaceans, and plant matter.
    • Tench are bottom-feeders and prefer food that sinks. Occasional treats like bloodworms or chopped earthworms are appreciated.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Green Tench are compatible with other peaceful pond fish like koi, goldfish, and orfe.
    • They are non-aggressive and can coexist with a variety of species, though they may be outcompeted by faster feeders if not given adequate food.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Green Tench are bottom-dwellers that tend to be shy and secretive, especially during the day. They are more active at dusk and dawn.
    • Best kept in groups of 2 or more for social comfort. They will often forage through the substrate and hide under vegetation.
