Our Guide To Keeping Green Texas Cichlid Fish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Herichthys carpintis
    • Common name: Green Texas Cichlid
    • Family: Cichlidae
    • Origin: Eastern Mexico, particularly the Pánuco River basin
    • Adult length: 25 to 30 cm
    • Lifespan: 10 to 12 years
    • Diet: Omnivore
    • Care Level: Moderate to Advanced
    • Temperament: Aggressive and territorial
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Green Texas Cichlids need a spacious tank, ideally 300L or more, to thrive and establish territory.
    • Provide a rocky aquascape with caves, driftwood, and robust décor to allow for territorial boundaries.
    • Use tough or artificial plants, as they tend to dig and may uproot delicate greenery.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Maintain a pH between 6.5 and 8.0.
    • Temperature should be kept between 24 to 28°C (75 to 82°F).
    • Water hardness should be moderate to hard.
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • Use a high-capacity filter like a canister or sump to handle bioload and maintain excellent water quality.
    • Moderate flow is ideal to simulate riverine conditions without stressing the fish.
  5. Diet:

    • Feed a high-quality cichlid pellet or flake as a base.
    • Supplement with frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, krill, and brine shrimp.
    • Include some vegetable matter like spirulina flakes or blanched spinach to maintain digestion and colouration.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Best kept with other large, robust cichlids or armored catfish like plecos.
    • Do not house with small or peaceful species, as they may be bullied or eaten.
    • Use caution with mixing males and females unless breeding is intended, as aggression may spike during spawning.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Green Texas Cichlids are intelligent, aggressive, and highly territorial, especially in confined spaces.
    • They may become more manageable with age, but should always be monitored in community tanks.
    • Best suited for species-only setups or carefully planned cichlid communities with ample space and visual breaks.
