Our Guide To Keeping Koi Cobra Guppy Fish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Poecilia reticulata (Selective Breed)
    • Common name: Koi Cobra Guppy
    • Family: Poeciliidae
    • Origin: Captive-bred variant, originally derived from South American guppy populations
    • Adult length: 3 to 6 cm
    • Lifespan: 2 to 3 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Tank size: A minimum of 40L is ideal for a group of Koi Cobra Guppies.
    • Decor: Use live plants like Java Moss, Anubias, or Amazon Sword to mimic natural hiding spots and enhance the tank's aesthetics.
    • Substrate: Fine gravel or sand is suitable for their tank.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting enhances their vibrant coloration.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • pH: Maintain a range of 6.8 to 7.8.
    • Temperature: Keep the water temperature between 22 to 28°C (72 to 82°F).
    • Hardness: Prefer moderately hard to hard water (8–12 dGH).
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • Filtration: Use a sponge filter or a gentle hang-on-back filter to avoid strong currents.
    • Water flow: Moderate flow is best, as guppies are not strong swimmers.
  5. Diet:

    • Staple food: Feed high-quality guppy pellets or flakes designed for tropical fish.
    • Supplement: Provide live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, or daphnia to enhance coloration and health.
    • Vegetables: Include blanched vegetables like spinach or zucchini for variety.
  6. Tank Mates:

    • Compatibility: They are peaceful and do well in community tanks with other non-aggressive fish.
    • Best tank mates: Neon tetras, mollies, platies, small rasboras, and corydoras.
    • Avoid: Aggressive or fin-nipping species such as tiger barbs or large predatory fish.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Activity: Koi Cobra Guppies are active and enjoy swimming throughout the tank.
    • Social behavior: They are social fish and thrive in groups of at least three.
    • Compatibility: Avoid overcrowding to reduce stress and maintain optimal water quality.
