Our Guide To Keeping L141 Ghost Pleco Fish
-
About Fish Species:
- Scientific name: Ancistomus snethlageae
- Common name: L141 Ghost Pleco
- Family: Loricariidae
- Origin: Tapajós River basin, Brazil, South America
- Adult length: Up to around 22 cm
- Lifespan: Around 8 to 12 years
- Diet: Omnivore with a strong preference for algae, biofilm, and other vegetable matter
- Care Level: Moderate
- Temperament: Generally peaceful, but territorial with similar plecos, especially adult males
-
Tank Setup:
- L141 Ghost Plecos do best in a mature aquarium with excellent oxygenation, stable water quality, and plenty of hiding places. A larger aquarium is recommended for adult fish because this species can grow well beyond the size of a typical Bristlenose.
- Use smooth rocks, wood, caves, and shaded areas to create secure territories. A soft sand or smooth fine gravel substrate is ideal to protect the underside of the fish.
- This species comes from flowing river habitat, so it benefits from a structured aquascape with strong aeration and a well-established biological system.
-
Water Parameters:
- L141 Ghost Plecos prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of around 6.5 to 7.5.
- Keep the water temperature between 24 to 29°C, and avoid allowing it to drop much below 25°C for long periods.
- Soft to moderately hard water is generally suitable.
-
Filtration and Water Flow:
- Strong filtration is important, as this species appreciates very clean, well-oxygenated water.
- Moderate to brisk water movement is recommended to replicate its natural riverine environment.
-
Diet:
- L141 Ghost Plecos should be offered a varied diet of algae wafers, spirulina foods, and quality sinking foods for loricariids.
- Supplement their diet with vegetables such as courgette, cucumber, spinach, and peas.
- They will also take some meaty foods, but these should be offered in moderation alongside a mainly vegetable-based diet.
-
Tank mates:
- L141 Ghost Plecos are generally suitable for peaceful community aquariums with medium-sized, non-aggressive fish.
- Suitable tank mates may include peaceful tetras, larger rasboras, Corydoras, and other calm South American species.
- Avoid very aggressive fish, and use caution with other plecos or bottom-dwellers unless the aquarium is spacious and provides multiple caves and territories.
-
Behavior and Compatibility:
- L141 Ghost Plecos are bottom-dwelling fish that spend much of their time grazing on surfaces and sheltering in caves or beneath wood.
- Adult males can become territorial with one another, particularly in smaller aquariums or where hiding places are limited.
- They are best suited to aquariums with stable conditions, strong oxygenation, and plenty of structure for retreat and grazing.
