Our Guide To Keeping Pacific Blue Eye Rainbowfish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Pseudomugil signifer
    • Common name: Pacific Blue Eye Rainbowfish
    • Family: Pseudomugilidae
    • Origin: Eastern Australia, including coastal streams, creeks, wetlands, and estuaries
    • Adult length: 4 to 5 cm
    • Lifespan: 2 to 3 years
    • Diet: Omnivore
    • Care Level: Easy to Moderate
    • Temperament: Peaceful
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Pacific Blue Eye Rainbowfish are small, active schooling fish that do best in a well-planted aquarium with open swimming space. A minimum tank size of 60L is recommended for a small group.
    • Provide areas of dense planting, floating plants, driftwood, and fine-leaved plants to help them feel secure and encourage natural behaviour. They look especially attractive in planted aquariums with gentle lighting.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Pacific Blue Eye Rainbowfish are adaptable fish and can tolerate a range of water conditions, but they do best in clean, stable water with a pH range of 6.5 to 8.0.
    • Keep the water temperature between 20 to 26°C (68 to 79°F).
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • A gentle to moderate water flow is suitable for Pacific Blue Eye Rainbowfish. Use a reliable filter that keeps the water clean without creating overly strong currents.
    • Good water quality is important, so carry out regular water changes and avoid allowing waste to build up in the aquarium.
  5. Diet:

    • Pacific Blue Eye Rainbowfish are omnivores and will accept a variety of small foods. Offer high-quality crushed flake, micro pellets, or specialist small tropical fish food as their staple diet.
    • Supplement their diet with small live or frozen foods such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, and finely chopped bloodworms to improve colour, condition, and breeding behaviour.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Pacific Blue Eye Rainbowfish are peaceful schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least six, although larger groups will show more natural behaviour and better colour.
    • They are compatible with other small peaceful fish such as small tetras, rasboras, dwarf Corydoras, small gobies, peaceful livebearers, and freshwater shrimp in well-planted aquariums.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Pacific Blue Eye Rainbowfish are active, social fish that spend much of their time swimming in the middle and upper areas of the aquarium. Males may display to each other, but this is usually harmless.
    • Avoid keeping them with large, aggressive, or fin-nipping fish that may stress, chase, or eat them. They are best suited to peaceful community aquariums or species-focused planted setups.
