Our Guide To Keeping Montezuma Swordtail Fish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Xiphophorus montezumae
    • Common name: Montezuma Swordtail
    • Family: Poeciliidae
    • Origin: Mexico
    • Adult length: 7 to 10 cm
    • Lifespan: 3 to 5 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Montezuma Swordtails prefer a well-decorated tank with hiding spots and open swimming areas. A minimum tank size of 75L is suitable for a small group of these fish.
    • Provide live or artificial plants, rocks, and driftwood for shelter and territory establishment.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Montezuma Swordtails thrive in slightly alkaline to neutral water conditions with a pH range of 7.0 to 8.0.
    • Maintain the water temperature between 22 to 26°C (72 to 79°F).
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • Choose a filter with a gentle to moderate flow, as Montezuma Swordtails do not prefer strong currents.
  5. Diet:

    • Montezuma Swordtails are omnivores, and their diet should include high-quality flake or pellet food as a staple.
    • Include live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms to provide variety and essential nutrients.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Montezuma Swordtails are peaceful community fish and can be kept with other peaceful species such as tetras, livebearers, and non-aggressive cichlids.
    • Avoid housing them with fin-nipping or aggressive fish to prevent stress and injuries.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Montezuma Swordtails are active swimmers, and males may display territorial behavior. Keep them in a ratio of females to males to reduce aggression.
    • They generally coexist well with other community fish but monitor for signs of aggression and adjust stocking if necessary.
