Our Guide To Keeping Salt & Pepper Cory Fish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Corydoras habrosus
    • Common name: Salt & Pepper Cory
    • Family: Callichthyidae
    • Origin: South America, specifically in the Upper Orinoco and Upper Rio Negro basins in Venezuela and Colombia
    • Adult length: 2.5 cm (1 inch)
    • Lifespan: 3 to 5 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Salt & Pepper Corys thrive in well-established tanks with soft, sandy substrate to allow for natural foraging behavior without causing damage to their delicate barbels.
    • Provide hiding places like caves, driftwood, and plants to make them feel secure.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Salt & Pepper Corys prefer slightly acidic to neutral water conditions with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Keep the water temperature between 22 to 26°C (72 to 79°F).
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • A gentle water flow is suitable for these fish, so choose a filter that provides gentle to moderate flow.
  5. Diet:

    • Salt & Pepper Corys are omnivores and will accept a variety of foods. Offer them a balanced diet consisting of high-quality sinking pellets or tablets as a staple.
    • Supplement their diet with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia to provide essential nutrients.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Salt & Pepper Corys are peaceful shoaling fish and should be kept in groups of at least six individuals.
    • They are compatible with other small, peaceful fish such as tetras, rasboras, and dwarf cichlids.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Salt & Pepper Corys are peaceful bottom-dwellers and exhibit shoaling behavior, so they feel more secure and display natural behaviors when kept in a group.
    • Avoid keeping them with large, aggressive fish species that may intimidate or outcompete them for food.
