Our Guide To Keeping Steel Blue Killifish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Fundulopanchax gardneri
    • Common name: Steel Blue Killifish
    • Family: Nothobranchiidae
    • Origin: Western Africa, specifically Nigeria and Cameroon
    • Adult length: 5 - 6 cm (2 inches)
    • Lifespan: 1 - 2 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Steel Blue Killifish prefer a tank with plenty of hiding places such as plants, caves, and driftwood.
    • The tank should have a tight-fitting lid as they are known to jump.
    • Provide a substrate of fine sand or gravel.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Steel Blue Killifish thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH range of 6.0 - 7.0.
    • Water temperature should be maintained between 22 - 26°C (72 - 79°F).
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • A gentle filtration system with minimal water flow is recommended.
  5. Diet:

    • Steel Blue Killifish are carnivorous and should be fed a diet primarily consisting of live and frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and small insects.
    • They may also accept high-quality flake or pellet foods, but live and frozen foods are preferred.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Steel Blue Killifish are relatively peaceful but may display aggression towards smaller or slower-moving tank mates.
    • They are best kept with other small, peaceful fish that can tolerate similar water conditions.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Steel Blue Killifish are active and may display territorial behavior, especially during breeding.
    • They are best kept in a species-only tank or with other small, peaceful fish.
