Our Guide To Keeping Venustus Cichlid Fish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Nimbochromis venustus
    • Common name: Venustus Cichlid
    • Family: Cichlidae
    • Origin: Lake Malawi in East Africa
    • Adult length: Up to 25 cm
    • Lifespan: 8 to 10 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Provide a tank with a minimum size of 200L for a single Venustus Cichlid.
    • Include plenty of rocks arranged to form caves and hiding spots, mimicking their natural habitat.
    • Substrate should be sand or fine gravel to allow for natural behaviors like sifting.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Maintain water conditions with a pH of 7.5 to 8.5.
    • Water temperature should be kept between 24 to 28°C (75 to 82°F).
    • Provide good water quality with regular water changes.
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • Use a powerful filtration system as Venustus Cichlids are messy eaters and produce a lot of waste.
    • Ensure adequate water flow, but avoid strong currents that may stress the fish.
  5. Diet:

    • Feed a varied diet including high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes as a staple.
    • Supplement their diet with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and small feeder fish.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Venustus Cichlids are semi-aggressive and territorial, so choose tank mates carefully.
    • Compatible tank mates include other larger African cichlids with similar temperaments and size requirements.
    • Avoid keeping with smaller or more peaceful fish that may become targets of aggression.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Venustus Cichlids are territorial and may exhibit aggression, especially during breeding times or when establishing territories.
    • Provide plenty of hiding spots and visual barriers to reduce aggression and territorial disputes.
