Our Guide To Keeping Yellow Convict Cichlid Fish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Amatitlania nanolutea
    • Common name: Yellow Convict Cichlid
    • Family: Cichlidae
    • Origin: Central America (Honduras, Costa Rica)
    • Adult length: 12 cm
    • Lifespan: 8 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Yellow Convict Cichlids prefer a tank with plenty of hiding spots and territories. A minimum tank size of 75 gallons is recommended.
    • Provide rocks, caves, and driftwood to mimic their natural habitat. They also appreciate plants like Java Fern and Anubias.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Keep the water temperature between 20 to 25°C (68 to 77°F).
    • Maintain a pH level between 6.5 to 8.0.
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • Yellow Convict Cichlids are tolerant of various water flow conditions but ensure adequate filtration to keep the water clean.
  5. Diet:

    • They are omnivores and will accept a variety of foods. Offer them a balanced diet of high-quality pellets or flakes supplemented with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and small insects.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Yellow Convict Cichlids are territorial and may be aggressive towards other fish, especially during breeding. They are best kept with other robust and similarly sized cichlids.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • They exhibit typical cichlid behavior, including digging and rearranging substrate. Avoid keeping them with timid or small fish that may become targets of aggression.
