Our Guide To Keeping Blueberry Snails

  1. About Species:

    • Scientific name: Tylomelania gemmifera
    • Common name: Blueberry Snail
    • Family: Pachychilidae
    • Origin: Sulawesi, Indonesia
    • Adult size: 3-5 cm
    • Lifespan: 3 to 5 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Blueberry Snails prefer tanks with sandy or fine gravel substrates and plenty of hard surfaces like rocks and driftwood for grazing and resting.
    • A minimum tank size of 20L is recommended for a small group of these snails.
    • They thrive in stable, warmer water conditions similar to their natural habitat.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Blueberry Snails require slightly alkaline water with a pH range of 7.5 to 8.5 to support shell health.
    • Maintain a warmer temperature range of 26 to 30°C (79 to 86°F) to replicate their native tropical environment.
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • A gentle to moderate water flow is ideal, allowing the snails to move and graze comfortably.
    • Ensure high water quality, as Blueberry Snails are sensitive to nitrates and ammonia levels.
  5. Diet:

    • These snails are omnivores and primarily graze on algae and detritus in the tank.
    • Supplement their diet with algae wafers, sinking pellets, and blanched vegetables such as spinach or zucchini for balanced nutrition.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Blueberry Snails are peaceful and can be housed with small, non-aggressive community fish, shrimp, and other snails.
    • Avoid keeping them with aggressive or snail-eating fish, such as certain loaches or cichlids, that may see them as prey.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • These snails are generally peaceful and spend most of their time grazing on surfaces within the tank, contributing to a clean environment.
    • They reproduce slowly in aquariums, so there is minimal risk of overpopulation.
