Our Guide To Keeping Red Ramshorn Snail

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Planorbella duryi
    • Common name: Red Ramshorn Snail
    • Family: Planorbidae
    • Origin: Worldwide (cosmopolitan species)
    • Adult length: 2 to 3 cm
    • Lifespan: 1 to 2 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Red Ramshorn Snails are highly adaptable and can thrive in a wide range of tank setups. A minimum tank size of 20L is sufficient for a small group.
    • They do well in planted tanks with plenty of hiding places and surfaces to graze on. They appreciate a variety of plants and decorations.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Red Ramshorn Snails can tolerate a wide range of water conditions but prefer slightly alkaline to neutral water with a pH range of 7.0 to 8.0.
    • Maintain the water temperature between 18 to 28°C (64 to 82°F).
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • A gentle to moderate water flow is ideal for these snails. Ensure the filter does not create too strong a current that might stress them.
  5. Diet:

    • Red Ramshorn Snails are omnivores and scavengers, feeding on algae, plant matter, and decomposing organic material. Provide them with a diet of fresh vegetables like spinach, lettuce, and zucchini.
    • Supplement their diet with algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and fish food pellets to ensure they receive all necessary nutrients.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Red Ramshorn Snails are peaceful and can be kept with a variety of tank mates, including small peaceful fish, shrimp, and other snails.
    • Avoid housing them with aggressive or large fish species that might see the snails as food.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Red Ramshorn Snails are active foragers and will spend a lot of time exploring the tank, climbing on plants and decorations.
    • They are non-aggressive and can coexist well with other peaceful inhabitants. Ensure there is enough food and space to prevent competition.
