Our Guide To Keeping Clown Loach Fish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Chromobotia macracanthus
    • Common name: Clown Loach
    • Family: Cobitidae
    • Origin: Indonesia, Borneo
    • Adult length: Up to 30 cm
    • Lifespan: 10 to 20 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Clown Loaches require a spacious tank with plenty of swimming space. A minimum tank size of 300L is recommended for a small group of these fish.
    • Provide hiding places like caves, driftwood, and plants to mimic their natural habitat.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Clown Loaches prefer slightly acidic to neutral water conditions with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Keep the water temperature between 25 to 30°C (77 to 86°F).
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • A moderate to strong water flow is suitable for these fish, so choose a filter that provides adequate filtration and water movement.
  5. Diet:

    • Clown Loaches are omnivores and will accept a variety of foods. Offer them a balanced diet consisting of high-quality pellets, flakes, and occasional live or frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Clown Loaches are peaceful fish but can be shy. They should be kept in groups of at least five individuals to feel secure and display natural behaviors.
    • They are compatible with other peaceful community fish like tetras, barbs, and rasboras.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Clown Loaches are social and active fish that enjoy exploring their surroundings. They may hide during the day and become more active during the night.
    • Avoid keeping them with aggressive or overly territorial fish species that may stress or harm them.
