Our Guide To Keeping Common Pleco Fish
-
About Fish Species:
- Scientific name: Hypostomus plecostomus
- Common name: Common Pleco
- Family: Loricariidae
- Origin: Northern South America (Amazon and Orinoco river basins)
- Adult length: Up to 50 cm
- Lifespan: 10 to 15 years
- Diet: Omnivore
- Care Level: Easy to Moderate
- Temperament: Generally peaceful but territorial with other plecos
-
Tank Setup:
- Common Plecos require a large aquarium due to their adult size. A minimum tank size of 300L is recommended.
- Include driftwood, rocks, and caves to provide hiding spots. They also enjoy dimly lit environments with subdued lighting and soft substrate.
-
Water Parameters:
- They thrive in water with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5.
- Maintain a water temperature between 23 to 28°C (73 to 82°F).
-
Filtration and Water Flow:
- They produce a significant amount of waste, so a strong and efficient filtration system is necessary.
- Moderate water flow replicating riverine conditions is ideal.
-
Diet:
- Although often labeled as algae eaters, Common Plecos need a varied diet. Feed them algae wafers, sinking pellets, and fresh vegetables like zucchini and cucumber.
- Supplement their diet with occasional protein-based foods such as bloodworms or shrimp pellets.
-
Tank mates:
- Compatible with most peaceful to semi-aggressive fish that are too large to be eaten.
- Avoid housing them with other large plecos unless the tank is very spacious, as territorial disputes can occur.
-
Behavior and Compatibility:
- Common Plecos are nocturnal and become more active after dark.
- They are mostly peaceful, but adult specimens can be territorial, especially toward similar species.
