Our Guide To Keeping L014 Sunshine Pleco

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Scobinancistrus aureatus
    • Common name: Sunshine Pleco
    • Family: Loricariidae
    • Origin: Rio Xingu, Brazil
    • Adult length: 25-30 cm
    • Lifespan: 10 to 15 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Sunshine Plecos prefer a large tank with plenty of hiding spots and smooth surfaces to graze on. A minimum tank size of 300L is recommended.
    • Include driftwood, caves, and smooth rocks to create a natural habitat and provide hiding places.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Sunshine Plecos thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water conditions with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Keep the water temperature between 26 to 30°C (79 to 86°F).
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • A strong water flow is suitable for these fish, so choose a filter that provides a high flow rate to mimic their natural river habitat.
  5. Diet:

    • Sunshine Plecos are omnivores with a preference for protein-rich foods. Offer a balanced diet consisting of sinking pellets, algae wafers, and occasional fresh vegetables.
    • Supplement their diet with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and chopped seafood to provide essential nutrients.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Sunshine Plecos are generally peaceful but can be territorial. They should be kept with other large, peaceful fish that can tolerate similar water conditions.
    • They are compatible with other large plecos, cichlids, and larger community fish.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Sunshine Plecos are nocturnal and most active at night. They will hide during the day and come out to forage after dark.
    • Avoid keeping them with very small or aggressive fish species that may harass or be intimidated by their size.
