Our Guide To Keeping Rainbow Shark Fish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Epalzeorhynchos frenatum
    • Common name: Rainbow Shark
    • Family: Cyprinidae
    • Origin: Thailand
    • Adult length: 15 cm
    • Lifespan: 6 to 8 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Rainbow Sharks require a tank of at least 150L with plenty of hiding spots and territories.
    • Provide caves, rocks, and driftwood for shelter, and consider adding hardy plants like Java Fern or Anubias.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Maintain slightly alkaline water with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5.
    • Keep the water temperature between 24 to 30°C (75 to 86°F).
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • Use a strong filtration system to maintain water quality, and ensure good water flow in the tank.
  5. Diet:

    • Rainbow Sharks are omnivores and will accept a variety of foods including high-quality pellets, flakes, and occasional treats like bloodworms or brine shrimp.
    • Ensure a balanced diet and avoid overfeeding.
  6. Tank mates:

    • They can be territorial, especially as they mature. Choose tank mates carefully, avoiding similarly shaped or aggressive fish.
    • Compatible tank mates include larger, robust community fish that can hold their own against the Rainbow Shark's territorial behavior.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Rainbow Sharks are territorial and may exhibit aggression towards similar or bottom-dwelling species.
    • Provide hiding places and territories to reduce aggression, and consider keeping them singly or in larger tanks with plenty of hiding spots.
