Our Guide To Keeping Black Choco Shrimp

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Caridina cf. cantonensis
    • Common name: Black Choco Shrimp
    • Family: Atyidae
    • Origin: Southeast Asia
    • Adult length: 2.5 - 3 cm
    • Lifespan: 1.5 - 2 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Black Choco Shrimp thrive in tanks with plenty of hiding places such as driftwood, rocks, and plants like Java Moss and Anubias.
    • Provide a substrate with small granules or sand to allow them to forage comfortably.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Black Choco Shrimp prefer slightly acidic to neutral water conditions with a pH range of 6.2 to 7.5.
    • Maintain the water temperature between 20 to 25°C (68 to 77°F).
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • A gentle filtration system is recommended to avoid sucking up small shrimp.
    • Ensure there are areas of still water or low flow to accommodate their feeding and breeding behaviors.
  5. Diet:

    • Black Choco Shrimp are omnivores and primarily feed on algae and biofilm. Provide them with algae wafers, blanched vegetables like spinach or zucchini, and occasionally small amounts of specialized shrimp food.
    • Avoid overfeeding to maintain water quality.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Black Choco Shrimp are peaceful and should be kept with other non-aggressive tank mates such as small tetras, rasboras, or small peaceful catfish.
    • They are generally safe with most snails and other peaceful invertebrates.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Black Choco Shrimp are active and social creatures, often seen grazing and exploring the tank.
    • They may breed readily in a well-established tank with stable water conditions.
