Our Guide To Keeping Cherry Shrimp
-
About Fish Species:
- Scientific name: Neocaridina davidi
- Common name: Cherry Shrimp
- Family: Atyidae
- Origin: Taiwan
- Adult length: 2.5 cm
- Lifespan: 1.5 to 2 years
-
Tank Setup:
- Cherry Shrimp thrive in densely planted tanks with lots of hiding places. A minimum tank size of 10 gallons is suitable for a colony of these shrimp.
- Provide plenty of mosses, such as Java Moss or Christmas Moss, and other plants like Anubias to create a natural environment and to support biofilm growth.
-
Water Parameters:
- Cherry Shrimp prefer stable water conditions with a pH range of 6.5 to 8.0.
- Maintain a water temperature between 18 to 24°C (64 to 75°F).
-
Filtration and Water Flow:
- Use a gentle filter or sponge filter to avoid sucking up baby shrimp or causing strong currents that could stress them.
-
Diet:
- Cherry Shrimp are scavengers and omnivores, feeding on algae, biofilm, and detritus in the aquarium. Supplement their diet with blanched vegetables like zucchini, spinach, or commercial shrimp pellets.
- Avoid overfeeding to maintain good water quality.
-
Tank mates:
- Cherry Shrimp are peaceful and can be kept with other non-aggressive species like small peaceful fish (e.g., small tetras, rasboras, guppies), snails, and other dwarf shrimp species.
- Avoid keeping them with large or aggressive fish that may prey on or harass them.
-
Behavior and Compatibility:
- Cherry Shrimp are active scavengers and breed readily in suitable conditions. They are best kept in groups to enhance their activity levels and breeding behavior.
- Provide adequate hiding places to help them feel secure and reduce stress.
